AI Overviews

Optimus Pass Glossary · Last updated August 29, 2026

Definition

AI Overviews are AI-generated answer blocks shown above traditional Google Search results, composed from pages Google has already indexed. Google states there are no additional requirements for appearing in AI Overviews beyond what already applies to Search: indexed, helpful, well-structured content.

Why it matters

AI Overviews sit at the top of the highest-intent queries and can satisfy the click without a visit. Brands that are never summarized lose the first impression of the query.

Practical example

A query like 'what is ad compliance' can show an AI Overview that summarizes several pages. A page with a clear, sourced definition is easier for the system to draw from than one that buries the answer.

Frequently asked questions

How do I opt out of AI Overviews?+
Google documents that the standard snippet controls — such as nosnippet and max-snippet robots meta tags — apply to content used in its AI features.
Do AI Overviews replace organic results?+
No. Traditional organic links still appear below the overview, and the overview itself links to sources. Appearing in either position still depends on being indexed and ranked.
