Answer Engine OptimizationAEO

Optimus Pass Glossary · Last updated August 29, 2026

Definition

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so it can be lifted directly as the answer to a specific question — featured snippets in Google, answer boxes, and voice-assistant responses. It favors question-shaped headings, self-contained answer paragraphs, and explicit FAQ markup.

Why it matters

An answer engine can only quote a passage that fully answers the question on its own. Content that buries the answer behind intro copy cannot be extracted cleanly, so a competitor's clearer page wins the mention.

Practical example

Instead of a paragraph that builds up to a definition, an AEO page opens with a 40–60 word direct answer under an H2 phrased as the question, then expands below.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special markup for featured snippets?+
Google states it uses the same ranking systems for featured snippets as for regular results, and that there is nothing special you can do to be considered for one. Clear, self-contained answer passages are what get selected.
Is AEO only about Google?+
No. The same principle — answer the question directly in an extractable block — applies to voice assistants and AI answer boxes, including the answer blocks inside AI Overviews.
